About:

This widget provides local Islamic prayer times that automatically update each day. Times are calculated for your locale using an approved calculation method. Of course, no calculation is a substitute for actually looking outside, and this widget may not have accurate times for every location (especially at extremely high or low latitudes), so you need to verify the accuracy for your location and adjust accordingly.

I cannot address issues about prayer times being miscalculated for a specific location. Every few days I receive an email from someone saying that the widget is inaccurate for their location. This is to be expected with any "universal" calculation method, such as the one used here. Once again, the times calculated are meant as estimates only and should in no way be regarded as authoritative. Please do not email me with issues related to inaccuracy in a specific location. I cannot answer every email I receive on this topic, nor is it likely that I will be able to tweak the calculation so that it is accurate for your location and remains roughly accurate for other locations. Thanks in advance.

Directions:

  1. Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger is required. If you're using Safari, click the download link. When the widget download is complete, Show Dashboard, click the Plus sign to display the Widget Bar and click the widget's icon in the Widget Bar to open it.

If you're using a browser other than Safari, click the download link. When the widget download is complete, unarchive it and place it in /Library/Widgets/ in your home folder. Show Dashboard, click the Plus sign to display the Widget Bar and click the widget's icon in the Widget Bar to open it.
  2. Click the 'i' in the upper-left hand corner to flip over the widget to configure it.
  3. The only required field is location. Type in your location and click done to get your prayer times!
  4. Elevation is optional, for all practical purposes. If you live at very high elevation and are getting inaccurate times, you should input your Elevation in meters to see if that helps.
  5. The time for 'Asr can be calculated in two different ways. The Hanafi way will place 'Asr later in the afternoon, as compared to the Shafi'i method. You can pick the method you prefer.
  6. The 'Isha method will allow you to customize how 'Isha (and Fajr) are calculated. Using 18° will make Fajr earlier and 'Isha later, as compared to 15°.
  7. For language, you may choose either English or Arabic. This will change the text on the front of the widget to the selected language.
  8. The Hijri Date Adjustment will allow you to add or subtract a number of days to the calculated hijri date for increased accuracy. If you find that the calendar is a day or two ahead, you may input '-1' or '-2' in this field to adjust the date backwards. Likewise, if you find the calendar is a few days behind, you may input a positive number to move the calculated date forward a few days.
  9. On the front, you will see the prayer times for the current day. The current prayer will be highlighted in either green (indicating plenty of time to complete the prayer), yellow (indicating less than 1 hour to complete the prayer), or red (indicating less than 30 minutes to complete the prayer). Between Sunrise and Dhuhr, no prayer will be highlighted.
  10. At the bottom, you will see the the qiblah for your location, which should never change. The current hijri date will appear to the right of this.
